Bodhidharma
The Emperor Wu asked of Bodhidharma: "I have built temples and monasteries, printed many sutras, ordained many monks, and donated much money to the spread of Buddhism. How much karmic merit have doing these deeds brought me?" Bodhidharma replied: "Why, none whatsoever."
The Emperor Wu then asked of Bodhidharma: "What, then, is the highest truth of Buddhism, monk, since you are obviously so knowledgeable?" Bodhidharma replied: "Vast emptiness, nothing holy."
Emperor Wu then asked: "So, who, then, is standing before me right now? Are you truly a sage, or just an ordinary man?" Bodhidharma shrugged and replied: "Hell if I know."
And Emperor Wu threw the impertinent monk out of the palace. Bodhidharma dusted himself off, shrugged, and went on his way.
